Why is my YouTube video not showing up in search results? It must be one of the most frustrating things when you have a brand new video you want to share with the world but Google is just not playing ball to show your video in any search results! You have also gone through the long list SEO “optimisation” tactics just to find out your video is still not showing on Google and YouTube.

Well sometimes it’s needed to take a few steps back and just check the basics to make sure your video / channel has been setup correctly.

Here are a few things I do when a client’s video is not preforming as expected!

Check the Privacy of your channel

Step 1

Navigate to YouTube and sign in to your account

Step 2

Once signed in click on your YouTube channel icon, located at the top right of the page. When the drop down window opens, click on the gears icon to access the settings page of your YouTube channel.

Step 3

On the left in the navigation menu select the “Privacy” link under the “Account Settings” heading.

Step 4

Make sure your channel is accessible to the public. Select or deselect settings under “Links and Subscriptions” and “Activity Feed

Step 5

Click on save – bottom left

Check / Change Your Channel Tags

Step 1

Navigate to YouTube and sign in to your account

Step 2

Once signed in click on your YouTube channel icon, located at the top right of the page. When the drop down window opens, click on the gears icon to access the settings page of your YouTube channel.

Step 3

In the main widow that opens go to the left bottom and look for the link “View additional features” Click on the link.

Step 4

On the left in the navigation menu select the “Advanced” link under the channel heading.

Step 5

Look for the “Channel keywords” text box and enter your channel tags.

Step 6

Click “Save” – Bottom left of page. It normally takes 48 hours for any changes to appear in search results.

Tips for Channel Tags

  1. Include your channel / business name
  2. Use specific tags – one word keyword.
  3. Use compound tags – multiple words describing your channel.
  4. Generic tag – general word to describe your channel. – e.g. funny, comedy, how to and so on.

Check / Change Your Video Tags

Step 1

Make sure you are signed into your YouTube account and navigate to https://www.youtube.com/features

Step 2

Click on “Video Manager” in the left navigation panel.

Step 3

Locate the video you want to edit. Look for the “Edit” button and click on it.

Step 4

Under “Basic Info” look for the “Tags field” and enter your tags. While you are here, take the time to go through your video title and description.

Step 5

Make sure the video is published and set to “Public” If it is “Unlisted” or “Private” update your settings.

Step 6

Click “Save changes” – Bottom right of page. It normally takes 48 hours for any changes to appear in search results.

Tips for Channel Tags

  1. Include your channel / business name
  2. You have 500 characters you can use in your video tag field
  3. Use specific tags – one word keyword.
  4. Use compound tags – multiple words describing your channel.
  5. Generic tag – general word to describe your channel. – e.g. funny, comedy, how to and so on.
  6. Don’t miss lead viewers – stay on topic of your video
